Choosing the Right Gear

Choosing the right gear for a Pacific Crest Trail thru-hike is a balancing act. You'll want to balance your need for comfort while hiking (the lighter your pack the better) with comfort while camping (greater comfort, heavier bag). The number of miles you plan on hiking per day will help you weigh the importance of each: if you plan on hiking 25 miles or more per day, you'll likely want to focus on keeping your pack as light as possible, while if you're planning to hike lower miles (ie. 10 miles per day) comfort while camping will hold greater importance.

Testing Your Gear

Make sure to test your gear and clothing setup before you hit the trail. Test your cold weather gear with an early spring or late winter overnight hike. Your rain gear can be tested on a rainy day, or, if you don't want to wait, a friend with a garden hose should be happy to help.
